개요

대한민국은 민주공화국이다.
대한민국헌법 제1조

동아시아에 위치한 한반도와 그 부속도서로 구성된 민주공화국이다. 수도는 서울특별시이며, 약칭으로 한국, 남한이라고도 불린다.

명목상 한반도 전체와 그 부속도서를 영토로 하지만 실질적으로 한반도의 남쪽 절반을 통치하며, 북쪽으로는 조선민주주의인민공화국과 군사분계선을 사이에 두고 접해 있다. 나머지 세 면은 동해[1], 황해, 동중국해[2]의 바다에 접해 있다.
